The Beginning of Brave Brother!

The Beginning of Brave Brother!
This is the beginning of BraveBrother.com!  A website dedicated to helping people build relationships with the natural world and with each other, across cultures.  Through language revitalization efforts, photography, video and audio productions, this project aims to explore the world, champion conservation efforts, and to bring awareness and to the preservation of the natural world.

The Story
The genesis of this site started more than twenty five years ago with a personal desire to learn a Native American language called Ojibwe. At the time, learning materials and resources were scarce.  I only had a few books and a set of recordings to use as the basis for self-instruction. The resources may have been limited, but the direction was clear, there was a personal goal to achieve a basic level of conversational dialog in the Ojibwe language.

In the beginning, I made a mistake, an assumption that learning the basics would only take a few months.  That in a few short years, I would be able to master larger volumes of vocabulary, verbs, and verb tenses.  The goal was to have a solid level of ability when interacting with fluent speakers.  That goal never really happened.

As the years have passed, there has been progress in learning the language, but I now realize the desire to speak Ojibwe has moved from short term goal to lifelong quest. The challenge to obtain a level of functional fluency will not be achieved quickly.  This has turned into a life-long endeavor that includes careful study, patience, practice and persistence.

This website is an extension of the quest to learn the Ojibwe language.  In order to engage and practice the language, my own creative skills will be used in from the following areas:
  • Photography
  • Video Production
  • Audio Engineering
  • Website Programming
  • Writing
Along with the creative skills mentioned above, there is a personal desire and motivation to bring the Ojibwe language to life for all people to enjoy. This quest has opened my thinking to include Indigenous, First Nation, Tribal, and diverse cultures from all over the world. The desire to learn the Ojibwe language, has grown into a mission to connect with people all over the world. The opportunity to engage with diverse cultures, to listen, and to amplify those voices is a main theme of this website.

The future to build connections around the world starts today and you are more than welcome to engage with this journey at any level.

Thanks for visiting!
